Initial Ideas & Research.

I decided to develop and do some research for a short film for my A2 Media course, instead of a music video because i believe that a short film will be a lot more interesting to create, and it will allow me to apply better audience, narrative and genre theory to my video. I've been researching 'short films' on YouTube and I've discovered a very diverse range of videos which all have their individual genre's that appeal to different audiences. The one that appealed to me the most was titled 'strangers' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpjHSiQLPmA), which is an intense thriller that deals with the issue of racial abuse and the complexities and difficulties of living in a multicultural society that causes some members of a certain belief to become angered at that fact, and decide to act out. I really admire how the video stimulates high levels of anticipation and ultra-heightened excitement and suspense while at the same time not a word is said throughout the entire film. It has all the the conventions of a thriller, tension building music and fast quick editing (camera jump cuts). It has inspired me to make my short video an intense thriller, with an exciting and tense chase scene like the one in 'strangers'. I won't use the same issues that it deals with though, at the moment I'm playing around with the idea of gang related violence and fear, that causes a main protagonist to try to escape somehow.
